Recycle Lebanon

Your Help is greatly appreciated

Tobacco Free Cigarette Collection

What’s the Problem

  • More than 4,500 chemicals are found in cigarettes (Hoffman, 1997).
  • Cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate, a plastic that is very slow to biodegrade.
  • Butt waste is not biodegradable: Filters are non-biodegradable, and while ultraviolet rays from the sun will eventually break them into smaller pieces, the toxic material never disappears and most of it ends up in the ocean.
  • Filters may make it easier for young people to start smoking and discourage smokers from quitting (Harris, 2011; National Cancer Institute, 2001; Novotny, 2009).
  • Cigarette butts first cause of pollution of the sea with plastic #MoveYourButts #BalaPlastic

Lebanon is ranked the 3rd in the world for cigarette consuption

How many cigarette butts in the Lebanese waters

Every year, billions of cigarette butts end up in dumpsters, landfills and coastal fills across Lebanon, collected through this program is recycled into a variety of industrial products, surfboards as benches, and any remaining tobacco will soon be recycled as compost.

What Recycle Lebanon did to help reduce cigarette butts waste and what is to come in that matter.

Through this free recycling program, TerraCycle offers participants the opportunity to recycle cigarette waste. You can empty the waste from any ashtray or receptacle into a sturdy plastic bag (like a garbage bag), place the tied-off bag in a box and ship it back to us to be recycled. With your TerraCycle.com account, you can join the free program and access prepaid UPS labels that would cover the shipping costs of the cigarette waste. All of the processing and recycling costs are covered by TerraCycle and our partners, so there is no financial obligation for you to participate in the recycling program.

Recycle chewing gum

And not only can you recycle littered cigarette butts, but we also offer an opportunity to recycle used chewing gum as well.

VIEW THE CHEWING GUM RECEPTACLE
These units create a professional, sleek recycling container for unwanted gum litter. Like our cigarette receptacles, these can be equipped with steel bolt bands for flexible placement at your location.

VIEW THE GUM ZERO WASTE BOX
Use a Used Chewing Gum Zero Waste Box to send in all of the used gum that you’ve collected at your location. This will ensure that the waste will be recycled instead of being thrown out.
